As of May 23, 2008, providers were required to submit an NPI number with all electronic transactions. The National Provider Identifier (NPI)* is a requirement of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). NPIs will recognize providers and eliminate the need for multiple identifiers when conducting electronic transactions. NPI will allow more efficient electronic transmission, and TRICARE® is able to receive your NPI information. If you haven't applied for your NPI yet, learn how to apply to avoid interruptions in claims' payments.
