Prime Disenrollment

Beneficiaries may disenroll from TRICARE Prime for these reasons:

  • They choose not to re-enroll after 12 consecutive months of enrollment
  • They obtain other health insurance that is primary to TRICARE
  • Their Primary Care Manager is no longer part of the network as the result of a change in contract

Prime beneficiaries will be disenrolled automatically for any of the following reasons:

  • Failure to make an installment payment toward the annual enrollment fee
  • Loss of TRICARE eligibility
  • Relocation outside of the prime contractor's jurisdiction (unless you choose to take TRICARE Prime with you using the portability option)

Portability

If you're enrolled in TRICARE Prime and move from one TRICARE region to another, you can take TRICARE Prime with you. With portability, your enrollment fees and anniversary dates will transfer along with you.

You may transfer enrollment twice during an enrollment year. There is no limit on transfers for active duty families.

If you enrolled in TRICARE Prime and are moving to another region, you should notify your TRICARE Service Center (TSC). The region you are moving from is responsible for healthcare until you enroll in the new region. The TSC in the former location notifies the TSC in the new location. This includes healthcare provided during the "portability window" — that is, during the time you are moving.

Prime Enrollment

The enrollment period for TRICARE Prime is 12 consecutive months. The active duty enrollment period is the fiscal year (October 1 through September 30). Enrollment periods for all other beneficiaries begin with the date of enrollment.

You may enroll in TRICARE Prime at your local service center. To be eligible for Prime benefits on the 1st day of any month, you must enroll by the 20th day of the previous month. If you enroll after the 20th day, your enrollment will not be effective until the 1st day of the second month following your enrollment.

For example:

If you enroll: You will be eligible:
March 19, 2005 April 1, 2005
March 21, 2005 May 1, 2005

Retired members, their families and former spouses (active or retired) must pay an enrollment fee. Active duty members and their families do not have an enrollment fee. The annual enrollment fees are:
  • $230.00 Individual
  • $460.00 Family
  • $230.00 Former Spouse

You may add individual family members at any time during the enrollment period. However, when the existing family enrollment ends, the enrollment of these new family members also ends. There are certain exceptions to enrollment regarding newborns, adopted children and severe healthcare situations. If you would like to enroll in TRICARE Prime, please visit our forms page.
