What is Balance Billing?
According to the Department of Defense Appropriations Act of 1993, providers who do not accept assignment can bill TRICARE patients no more than 115% of the TRICARE maximum allowable charge. Billing a patient more than 115% of the TRICARE maximum allowable charge is considered "balance billing" and can result in exclusion from TRICARE and other government healthcare programs.
